Title: Horizon Color + Binning
Post by: John.Sankus on January 16, 2018, 05:56:45 pm
When binning (any) with the infinity software and the Horizon camera, its b&w - is there a way to bin in color?

thanks.

In the newest version (to be published within a few days) you can 'color bin'.

Not unless the actual sensor chip allows color binning and the only chip I know that allows color binning is made by Kodak.

If you think about the binning process, you will realize why binned results are normally B&W.

I watched Stephen's live broadcast from Lisbon last night with the Horizon colour camera - 2x2 binning in colour so presumably this is now possible?

It is now possible! As of yesterday, the core software download includes the version of Infinity with colour binning that Steve and Rui were using in the broadcast.

This is done differently to traditional CCD on-chip binning, as the individual colour channels are binned in software after the unbinned image has been read out and debayered.

We put up a post here - https://www.atik-cameras.com/news/colour-binning-atik-infinity-software/ (https://www.atik-cameras.com/news/colour-binning-atik-infinity-software/) and we also have a post about binning in general here https://www.atik-cameras.com/news/binnning-the-differences-between-cmos-and-ccd/ (https://www.atik-cameras.com/news/binnning-the-differences-between-cmos-and-ccd/) if anyone wanted to read a little more.

Hope you enjoy using it  :D

I stand corrected and am totally glad to admit it if, indeed, the Infinity software can produce a (pseudo) color binned image!

Great job!

I see this applies to the Horizon camera as well.  Mine is on pre-order...
