Title: My first deep sky LRGB image M51
Post by: james_screech on April 20, 2020, 12:19:16 pm
My first LRGB deep sky image. Atik 414ex, ZWO LRGB filters & ED70 (f6) telescope. Captured with APT, processed in DSS & PS. 35 x 3min subs in each filter, dark, bias and flat corrected.

I have done DSLR deep sky in the past (a few years ago) but not mono CCD & LRGB. Not great processing the brighter stars have a blue halo that could do with some work, but I'm pleased for a first attempt at processing. I'll spend some more time playing with it when I get the time.

Nice James!

What mount are you using to get the 3 minute subs?

I was using a Celestron AVX and guiding with a finder/guider.

I've been looking at my star charts to try to figure out what the edge-on galaxy in the upper left of the picture is. Do you know?

I see an edge-on galaxy to the lower right not upper left, I think it's IC4263, it's distance is about 40 Mpc (varies in different sources) I haven't been able to find a V magnitude.

Added a second night's data so now 65 x 180sec for each filter and re-processed a bit more carefully.

M51 is described mostly as a Sbc-type galaxy. The beautiful spiral pattern shows arms of young, blue stars, interwoven with dust lanes. The center has an oval ring of blue knots, somewhat resolved in my image

Looking very nice James,

The 414 is a very capable camera. If you get a chance to get an Ha filter you will really see the difference between a colour DSLR and a cooled mono CCD camera.
