Focusing Problem
« on: May 06, 2014, 10:56:12 PM »
Ok, I have spent the last four hours trying to focus the Atik 4000 Mono and failed. It's attached to an SX filter wheel which is attached to an APO Refractor ( FL is 900mm at f/7.5). I have tried everything but nothing works. Once I managed to make a glimps of stars but that was all. I couldn't get them focused. I have attached an image just so you know what I usually get. I don't know what to do.

Hi Kenza, it's hard to say what it is that you are doing wrong. The image looks like a "dark" as if either the lens cap was on or shutter was closed. What software are you using? If something like Maxim make sure that it is set on "lights" and not "dark" or "bias".
More info would help. The only other thought I have is if using a reducer that maybe the distance is incorrect.

What power supply are you using?

With the 4000 the way I focus is:
1. switch to 3x3, usually with a subframe, to get a initial focus
2. once closer - move to 2x2..
3. finally 1x1.

By doing this the image that is downloaded is smaller and so each step to focus is faster.

That does look like a bias shot.
