What is needed for Canon lenses and 383L Mono?
« on: June 24, 2012, 09:07:05 PM »
I want to do some wide field imaging with my Canon lenses and 383L mono. I found the Canon adapter at Geoptic, http://www.geoptik.com/en/scheda-prodotto/mechanical-accessories/144/30a189/214/30a189.html and I was wondering what else I need to make it work.
Has anyone here used Canon lenses with Atik cams? How were the results? Do I need any spacers for proper focus?
Thanks a lot!

Kevin,

I've used a 428Ex with Canon lenses w/ good success.  You require a spacing of 44mm from the lens flange to the CCD sensor.  On the 428Ex the sensor to front flange is about 12mm, so a T2->EOS adapter plus spacers to give 32mm (or a touch less) is required.

I forgot to mention that I am using the EFW 2. Do you know what the spacing is with the FW in place? Thanks for the quick response.

What is the filter wheel width?  22mm+/-?  Leaves 10mm for an adapter from the FW thread to EOS adapter.  Not too sure if you can accomplish this??

I found and ordered this at OPT. I have the proper adapters to get everything connected. This should do the trick, right? Thanks to all for the help!!

Kevin,

Please give us a list of all the items between the front of the 383L, i.e.: what do you have between the sensor in your camera and the flange on your EOS lens?  Do all the pieces add up to 44mm or slightly less?

I have the camera>filter wheel>54mm to T adapter (Atik part, maybe 1mm)> 10mm spacer> Geoptic camera adapter. FW is 22mm plus the 1 mm adapter, plus the 10mm spacer gives me 33mm. I have to measure the Geoptic adapter that I linked in the original post, but I think I am close to exactly 44mm from flange to sensor. Thanks again for the quick response

Kevin,

Depends on width of the Geoptic adapter but I don't think you're going to need any spacers to get a sensor to EOS flange distance of 44mm?

I tried with the 10 mm spacer and could not reach focus. I am going to try without the spacer next time and see what I get. I think I will be close without it. By the time I got the spacer off, (stuck) it had clouded up. :-[
