Darks and the Hyperstar lens?

Wondering if when i take a dark I can "check" it to see if its ok? Is there a test or something to look for? Im using the Atik 420 color on a hyperstar and since it sits out above the top of the scope there is no real good way to seal it closed for darks. Any ideas? Suggestions, Anything???
